 Hogan the blue-eyed dad, Colt the mature-looking son and Jason…the far-too-hot shirtless hunk. As she committed the names to memory, Honor glanced at each of them, but repeatedly got drawn back to Jason.  

The sun highlighted the cut of his cheekbones, the straight line of his nose and across those sleek, hard shoulders. Why didn’t he put on a shirt? She couldn’t quite keep her gaze from his chest, noting he had just the right amount of dark chest hair going from one well-defined pec to the other then bisecting his body downward… 

It wouldn’t kill the man to pull up his well-worn jeans, either. Being healthy and female and, okay, more than a little sex starved, she automatically tracked the treasure trail leading down his abdomen to inside those low-slung jeans… 

“Hogan and Colt live here, too,” Jason said while silently accepting her scrutiny. 

Busted again. She cleared her throat and got her eyes to focus back on his face. “I see.” To Hogan, she asked, “You and your wife are in the neighborhood?” 

Pushing away from the truck, Hogan said, “Colt’s mother is gone.”  

That left her floundering. Did he mean…dead? Should she give condolences? 

Or maybe he meant she’d moved away.  

“For now,” Hogan continued, “we live with Jason.” 

Oh. With him. In the same house.  

All three of them—right next door to her.  

Saving her from the awkward silence, Lexie took over. “I’m Lexie Perkins, and the new homeowner here is Honor Brown.” Then to Jason, she added, “You’re going to make her faint if you don’t let up.” 

“Lexie!” Horrified, Honor felt so much heat in her face it nearly singed her. She’d gag her friend if she didn’t stop with the outrageous behavior.

Review:

WOW! Another fabulous story from Lori Foster, and Don't Tempt Me is like a twofer...you kinda get 2 love stories all wrapped and gifted to you in this book. First there is Honor and Jason's story and then intertwined with it you have Honor's BFF, Lexie and her man Sullivan!

Honor is shy and not very trusting of people, she has spent the past few years looking after the Grandfather who raised her, dealing with crazy family issues, and working hard to make a life for herself. She is finally at the point in her life where she can buy a home. The neighborhood where her home is located is a work in progress and just so happens to be full of hot guys, especially the Guthrie Boys...Jason, his brother Hogan and Hogan's son, Colt.

Jason & Honor's relationship start off with a literal bang...she ran over his trash barrel with her moving truck. From there we witness the slow progression of her learning to trust in others (and especially Jason) and Jason's unending patience while working his way into honor's life and heart.

Don't Tempt Me is a little slower paced than Lori's Ultimate series and Men Who Walk The Edge series, but slower paced~meaning tamer, sweeter, and although there is a tiny bit of what you might call suspense, it's not what you would expect as a fan of Lori's books. Please don't take what I said the wrong way, I absolutely enjoyed this book!! It was just a really great story, with wonderful characters and a gently paced plot. A perfect beach read!

Prologue

Callahan

Three days.

That’s all I have left until this shit ends.

Three days shouldn’t feel like forever, not compared to the eight years I’ve bled to the Army. Thing is, good men have been killed in less time. In as quick as a blink, a squeeze of a trigger, or a small breath right before a grenade blows is all the time it takes to shove someone right out of life and well into death.

That’s what makes three days as long as it is. Three days is plenty of time to die.

My eyes tear when the wind picks up and shoots grime through the small hole of my lookout point. This blown out piece of cinderblock is only big enough to allow me a view of the street below, but not so small I don’t get smacked in the face with more filth. The tarp flaps above me as I spit out another layer of the dirt-sand mix spackling my teeth. Christ Almighty, I need a swig of the water resting near my elbow. But my thirst, like everything else has to wait.

I have a job to do.

I adjust my hips against the cracked cement of my bed, bathroom, and home all rolled into one, thankful that the agonizing ache stretching over the lower half of my body has settled into a now familiar numbness.

Out of all the points I’d scouted, and all the accumulated years spent in this position, I should be used to it. And in a strange way, it should almost be home. Yet nothing ever has been home.

But in three days, maybe something finally will be . . .

I shove my thoughts away and breathe as my fellow Rangers stalk along the street. It’s then I see them, a mother and daughter walking straight toward my team. Less than one city block separates them from the men counting on me to keep them alive.

The hell? How did they get past the other sniper unreported? Rogers is new on watch. But the quick paces these two are taking should have clued him in that something’s up. I train my scope on their faces; their expressions are blank, unreadable. ‘Cept that’s not what keeps my attention.

The little girl can’t be more than five. So why the fuck isn’t her mother holding her hand? I lift my radio and bark a warning, dropping it beside me as I lock my scope dead center on the woman’s head.

The radio crackles and Modreski chimes in, yelling at his team to hold their positions. He asks me what my plan is, knowing if something’s caused the short-hairs on my neck to rise, he and the boys damn well need to listen. But I don’t hear him, with a breath and a squeeze of the trigger, I leave a kid without a mother.

Just beneath the sleeve of her abayah―the dress completely covering her body―I see it, a detonator that would trigger the explosives likely strapped to her chest.

 A few Rangers I

know―Simons and Boreman, rush forward. I start to mutter a curse, pissed at her for making me shoot her in front of her kid. But the curse lodges in my throat when I see the kid isn’t looking at her mother lying next to her dead.

She’s watching my advancing team as she lifts the detonator clasped tight in her hand.

It was dark outside, grown late, and I hadn’t eaten dinner yet. Somewhere out there, Philip was probably dining with crystal and expensive wine. Meanwhile I’d probably order a pizza with one of those coupons by the door. A low sound raised the hair on my neck. Oh God, I’m not alone. My gaze swept over the small dorm room. From here I could see the tiny bedroom area and the kitchenette. I could see almost the entire space. Empty. Maybe it was just one of my neighbors getting busy and— The sound came again, louder. A shiver ran through me. It was coming from outside the room, but not from either side. It was coming from the door. I crept over and looked out the peephole. An empty hallway bulged in the distorted lens. Now I was doubting myself. Had I actually heard something? Maybe it had come from the dorm room across the hall. When I first moved here, it had been shortly after my “ordeal,” as my adoptive mother called it. I had jumped at every sound, both real and imagined, more traumatized by my brush with danger than I’d wanted to admit. My gaze snapped to my phone. I could call my adoptive mother right now, but I knew she wouldn’t want to be bothered. I could call the building management, but I knew what would happen. The same thing that had happened last time I called them. They’d send my floor advisor to check on me. If there was anything scary in this hallway, she’d have to face it first. And if there wasn’t anything scary, if it was my imagination again, the PTSD I didn’t want to acknowledge, well then everyone would know how fucked up I was inside. No, I had to be overreacting. This was nothing. There was no one in the hallway. And even if there was, it would be some drunk guy, passed out on the wrong floor. I’m a normal college student, I reminded myself. I’m not afraid of anything. Both of those things were lies, I was neither normal nor brave, but at least I could send a drunk frat boy on his way. I opened the door a crack. Nothing. Relief filled me, and I opened the door wider. A body slid inside, slumped over without the door to support him. A short scream escaped me before I caught myself. He was wearing a three-piece suit stained with blood, his expression slack, eyes glassy with pain and delirium. Philip. Oh God, he was hurt. Really badly hurt if he couldn’t stand up. Horribly hurt if he’d ever have come to me of all people. I didn’t have time to process the shock of it, of seeing him again. I had to get him out of sight. If he’d been injured like this, someone was after him. Someone would want to finish the job.

Matt seriously doubted that. In past USO shows, some women had sung, performed in a string quartet playing classical music no one recognized, or done a dancing act. While he had an appreciation of the arts in general, it just wasn’t something that got his blood pumping. His head fell forward, chin almost on his chest, and his mind started to drift off into the zone just before sleep.  

“Dara and Callie are belly dancers!” Maggie crowed. 

The entire chow hall erupted into loud hooyahs, clapping and wolf-whistling. 

Matt jerked awake. He scowled, rubbing his face. What? Belly dancing! No way. He stared irritably at a smiling Maggie in her fall-colored outfit.  

“Hey,” Beau said, jabbing him in the ribs, “did you hear that? Belly dancers! God, I’ve died and gone to heaven!” 

“In your dreams,” Matt muttered irritably.  

“Seriously, bro. You were half-asleep a minute ago. Now look at you,” Beau howled, slapping Matt good-naturedly on the back. 

“. . . and the sisters will be performing Turkish belly dancing,” Maggie was explaining. “It’s different from Egyptian or other types of belly dancing.” 

Turkish belly dancing? Now, that got Matt’s full attention. He’d spent his summers until age eighteen is Kuşadası, Turkey, where his three wealthy uncles had villas. He was very familiar with belly dancing because it was beloved throughout the country, and he’d seen professional dancers perform many times over the years.  

Straightening up, his arms fell to his sides. Seriously? These two women were going to perform as belly dancers? Matt could feel the electricity in the chow hall amp up. It felt like a fifty-thousand-watt bolt of lightning had just slammed into the place. The men were focused, all eyes on that hastily created platform where the acts would perform. The anticipation ratcheted up, the tension palpable.  

Matt felt as if a pack of wolves were waiting for those two sweet lambs to come out onstage. God, this place was going to explode, he thought, looking around.  

“. . . Now, please welcome the McKinley sisters! Dara is in the red costume and Callie in the purple one,” Maggie shouted, moving offstage, gesturing toward the other end. 

Matt’s eyes narrowed as he saw two women come running like sleek, beautiful gazelles from behind the chow-hall-line wall. His heart thudded hard in his chest as the taller one, her blond hair long and halfway down her back, barefoot and wearing a red and gold belly-dancing costume, came out first.  

Holy shit! She was gorgeous! His mind went from getting sleep to an intense focus on the woman’s tall, lithe body. Her arms were long and sinuous, her slender hands clapping zills—small finger cymbals—her movements slow and graceful.
