Double Dog Dare by J. A. Coffey

Double Dog Dare
Southern Seductions #4
by J. A. Coffey

Allison Dare is having a bad month. Make that a bad year. A broken foot. Sidelined from an active career fighting crime. She sure as hell doesn’t need to deal with a four-footed canine disaster inherited from her recently departed cousin. In a desperate attempt to get her life in order, she hires a dog trainer. The only problem is he’s sexy and stubborn as sin. With her old life torn away, can she reinvent herself when she can’t seem to control her new pet or her feelings for a man who refuses to take orders?

Decorated vet Mack Taylor has tortured himself since the day his mistake cost him his loyal K-9 partner and part of his leg. Now the owner of a dog kennel in Atlanta, he spends his days working with pampered pets in need of potty training. A chance encounter with gutsy Allison puts him on edge in more ways than one. Suddenly, he finds himself hoping against hope…dreaming dreams that he has no right to dream…and taking his chances on a love that could transform them both.

Review:

Although part of a series, Double Dog Dare can be read as a stand-alone book. This is the first book by J.A. Coffey that I have had the pleasure of reading - it certainly won't be the last.

Allison has been sidelined by a broken foot - a fact she hasn't shared with her team yet. Mack lost not only his K-9 partner in combat, but he lost his foot too. Both are trying to deal with these huge changes in their lives when fate brings them together.

Allison's cousin passes away and leaves behind her beloved pet, a Labradoodle named Sir Precious Picklechips. Precious is a very precocious pup and quite untrained. Allison doesn't have the best history with pets and is concerned that something may happen to Precious while in her care.

Mack is a dog trainer who runs a shelter/boarding place for dogs and is attempting to train a few unwanted dogs to become service dogs for veterans. Allison turns to Mack for help with training Precious in hopes of re-homing him to a family. Mack agrees to take on Allison and precious even though he thinks it may be a bad idea.

Between miscommunication, both suffering from PTSD, and each feeling guilty about their pasts, can these two successfully work with Precious and each
 other?

Double Dog Dare was a fantastic read. Taking on the very serious matter of PTSD, loss, and injury can be a downer in a book - not the case for this one. I loved these characters, they were strong on the outside and both dealing with serious emotional issues on the inside. There was just enough steam, angst, & mixed emotions to make for a great story.

Effie's Outlaw by Karen Lopp-Spotlight & Giveaway

Book Title:  Effie's Outlaw
Genre and Sub-Genre:  Historical Western Romance

Blurb:

Boston heiress Effie Sheridan takes matters into her own hands when her fortune is being stolen. The last thing she expects is to be kidnapped by a gang of train robbers. Forced to pretend to be an outlaw's lover to stay alive, she questions her sanity when she is drawn to the gruff, yet charming bandit who risks everything to save her.

U.S. Deputy Alex Marshall is mad enough to spit nails when the beautiful, city-bred girl lands in his arms. Unable to abandon her to the cruelties of the gang, he searches for a way out of the responsibility. But her courage and sweet kisses begin to chip away at the bitterness inside his heart and he must choose between revenge on the gang that slaughtered everyone he loved or redemption for saving a woman he can never have.

Excerpt:

“Want some, darlin’?” Alex nibbled on her ear and shoved the communal whiskey bottle to her lips, his voice husky and loaded with the promise of pleasure.

A rush of heat settled in her loins. Nose crinkled, she pushed the beverage away and squirmed.

“No, thanks,” Effie demurred. Liquor wouldn’t cool the unexpected and inappropriate carnal desire that burned inside her.

Alex’s response to her shifting in his lap was immediate and shocking. She might be a virgin but she wasn’t clueless about male anatomy. Ducking her head into his shoulder, Effie sucked in a sharp breath in an effort to cool the heat in her cheeks.

“More for me.” He chuckled as if nothing happened.

“You tell a woman what to do, not ask, you fool.”

Sam’s snarl felt like being drenched in frigid water, dousing the hot surge of passion. Effie shuddered.

Alex’s entire body tensed and one hand slid down her side to rest on the butt of his Colt. Effie scooted off his lap.

Bio:

Steeped in a rich family history, Karen Lopp has always been drawn to the courageous lives of the women who lived through the hardships of the past and triumphed.

A transplant from Oklahoma where she grew up on a farm just one mile away from where her great-grandparents settled in the land run, Karen now lives in the enchanted land of New Mexico and has a running competition with her dad on who can grow the tallest hollyhocks. Books and tales of ancestors were staples in her life and she fell in love with history. Enthralled with the short stories her grandmother wrote and passed down, she took the plunge (with encouragement from hubby and kids) into the world of writing. And is now hooked. Her inspiration comes from research into her family tree and their interesting lives.

WIP

This is a blurb for my next western:

But when the local ladies’ man decides to peruse her, he threatens the new life she’s building. Can she past his past when she can’t get over hers?

I am also writing a contemporary suspense:

Detective Rissa Marten sacrificed her only chance at a normal life to put a drug lord behind bars. Now her life in the shadows might become quick death in the light as the only way to save the man she loves, who believes her dead, is to face the cartel whose been hunting her for eight years.

Review:

The First thing I HAVE to say about this book....DAMN, Luke is hot!!!! OK, and so isn't Damon-at first (nope, not gonna tell). Just reading about Luke gives a girl the sweats & chills...yup, it's a cold shower, extra batteries, need your significant other, type of read!
Yes, Claimed In Canada is full of hot sex, but it also contains a fantastic storyline. Violet has to decide between playing it safe with the type of guy she normally dates, or completely going out on a limb and trying something/someone new. Which will it be?

Claiming His Cowgirl by Sorcha Mowbry-guest post, review, & contest!

Claiming His Cowgirl
by Sorcha Mowbry

A huge THANK YOU to Sorcha Mowbry for stopping by the blog today!

HEA vs HFN
As a writer I leave stories in various states of completeness. The truth is, it's always nice to leave things in a Happily Ever After (HEA) state. But sometimes that just isn't possible. Sometimes the story simply comes to a close without the wedding bells. Maybe it's because of the story length, or maybe it's because of the emotional journey it took the hero and heroine to get to where they are when the story ends.
I've learned to live with the Happy For Now (HFN) endings, especially when it just wouldn't be realistic to go for the HEA just yet. My One Night With A Cowboy stories tend to be HFN endings because they are short stories. I know two people can meet and fall in love really fast, I met my husband and moved in with him within two months and we just celebrated 13 years of marriage. But, in order to write a book and not have it turn into War and Peace sometimes we have to accelerate the timeline. That often means that a wedding simply isn't believable.
Cassie and Trent get their HFN, and I stuck with something they wanted and that I thought was believable based on how they met.
Of course, you all will have to be the judges.

I want to know if you as a reader have a preference. HEA or HFN? Why?
Comment below and then be sure to enter to win prizes via the Rafflecopter form below

Blurb

***Warning: This story contains one dominant cowboy and the lady that will test his control. It also includes spanking, dominance, submission, bondage, and anal sex.***

Cassie Truhart is too busy with life and the Golden Mustang Dude Ranch to worry about love. Especially since her fiancé dumped her for an easier life in the city. Elbow deep in horseshit, she never expects to meet a man capable of commanding not only her attention, but possibly her love.

Trent Jones agreed to a blind date to appease his pesky younger sister. He never imagined finding a woman that would rouse every dominant instinct he possessed, much less love. Good thing his real date cancelled at the last minute.

As Cassie and Trent indulge their strong sexual attraction, he must discover if one night with a cowboy is long enough for him to claim his cowgirl.

Excerpt

Cassie bent over and jammed the shovel into the smelly mix of hay and horse dung. The pungent odor hung heavy in the air as she flung the shovelful of mixture into the wheelbarrow. Almost done.

The streaming rays of sun licked the barn through the open door. Ownership of the Golden Mustang Dude Ranch was everything she’d dreamed of and more, with one small exception. Her ex-fiancé had ridden off into the sunset—without the girl. He’d lasted two months before declaring he couldn’t handle ranch life.

Cassie snorted. Ranch life.

The dude ranch was so far removed from real ranch life it wasn’t worth the effort to explain. The Mustang made good money from the guests that came for the atmosphere. Very few vacationers sought out a real ranch experience. They came to use the spa and lounge by the pool. In winter they came for the snow and the pageantry of Christmas. Most folks weren’t looking for anything more ranch-like than a short jaunt on horseback.

If this were a real ranch, the animals they cared for would be their life’s blood instead of relegated to ambiance. The last of the dirty hay landed in the wheelbarrow. Cassie wiped the sweat off her brow and set down the shovel. With a solid grip, she lifted the barrow and headed toward the compost pile. Hay and horseshit mixed with kitchen scraps made fantastic dirt. Back in the barn, she spread fresh hay in all the stalls she’d cleaned. The raspy rumble of a masculine throat clearing startled her.

“Shit! Do you always sneak up on people like that?” She returned to spreading hay.

“Sorry, ma’am.” He tipped his hat in a mingled greeting-apology.

“No worries. I was probably over-focused on a simple task.” She glanced back and smiled at him. Whoa. That was a real cowboy. Not some duded-up city boy. Worn jeans molded to strong thighs. His shirt fit him like it was made for him, and the Stetson on his head would have looked wrong anyplace else. She stopped spreading hay and faced the stranger. “Is there something I can do for you?”

“I was hoping to get in a quick ride. Feeling kind of antsy.” He let his gaze drift down her body in a slow, blatant appraisal.

Review

Claiming His Cowgirl was a scorching hot, fun, quick read! I loved this book. Sorcha Mowbry packs a lot of story into a few short pages. I like these kind of books (novellas) and read them at least 2-3 times a week, in between full-length novels. Most of the time they are pretty good stories, but understandingly due to the short length may be lacking in the detail dept. Claiming His Cowgirl, however, has just the right amount of background history and detail that allows the reader to really get to know and understand the characters. This in turn, allows for a complete reading experience in just a short amount of time. The story has a begining, middle, & ending...with enough leeway in the ending to give the reader an opportunity to use their imagination for the final outcome-hence a HFN ending.

Did I mention this story was HOT?
As in...you may need a fire extinguisher, cold shower, or your own cowboy, HOT!

Although Claiming His Cowgirl is a part of the One Night With a Cowboy series, it is a stand-alone book and can be read with or without reading Taking Her Chance, however, I recommend reading them both....

Sorcha Mowbray is a mild mannered office worker by day…okay, so she is actually a mouthy, opinionated, take charge kind of gal who bosses everyone around; but she definitely works in an office. At night she writes romance so hot she sets the sheets on fire! Just ask her slightly singed husband.

She is a longtime lover of historical romance, having grown up reading Johanna Lindsey and Judith McNaught. Then she discovered Thea Devine and Susan Johnson. Holy cow! Heroes and heroines could do THAT? From there, things devolved into trying her hand at writing a little smexy. Needless to say, she liked it and she hopes you do too!
