• Please
tell us a little about yourself….
I'm a British ex-pat, living in North Carolina at the moment
with my military husband and yellow lab. When I say 'at the moment' I really
mean it, because we should get orders sometime in the next year to go live
somewhere else. So adventure is always beckoning! I love traveling and seeing
new places, and I don't get too stressed by the thought of having to uproot our
lives to move. Except when I think about having to pack up my collection of
shoes.
• What is
one thing about you that your readers would find surprising or never guess
about you?
While traveling, I got stuck in Johannesburg, South Africa.
All the flights back to London were overbooked and I couldn't find one at all.
The prospects for the following week were more of the same full flights. So I
sweet-talked a cargo plane's crew into taking me with them to their next stop,
which was Nairobi, Kenya. While we were in the air, we were shot at (with
small-arms fire) from the mountains in Mozambique, so I spent most of that
flight praying in the cargo hold with pallets of mangoes and roses around me.
When we got to Nairobi, the crew kindly introduced me to the crew of another
cargo plane headed to Cairo, Egypt. They allowed me on board but only if I
cleaned the flight deck for them first. Turns out pilots are MESSY when they
don't work for a commercial airline! After cleaning out the remnants of their
last three meals (and using my perfume to mask that musty bachelor smell), we
made it to Cairo and they handed me over to yet another crew. This third cargo
flight crew said they'd take me to Gatwick, UK if I helped them get catering on
the flight. Luckily the first person I came across on the ramp in the Cairo
airport was a man in British Airways uniform! He took me to the catering depot
and let me pay in British pounds for some food for the crew. A mere two days
after I left Johannesburg, I was back home! My unusual transportation
arrangement meant that I never got a South African exit visa (I was sneaked out
on to the ramp by the pilot) so I always wonder if the authorities think I'm
still there ;) Looking back on that whole escapade always makes me wonder how I
made it out of my twenties alive!
• Tell us a
little about your latest book
Dangerous Territory is the story of an embedded journalist
who loses her patrol in Afghanistan, only to be rescued by a battle-weary,
journalist-hating US Air Force Pararescuer—who discovers that he has already met
her...
• What’s
one thing that you enjoy most about writing? Least?
The best thing about writing is that I get to look into an
alternate reality in which my characters actually exist. And who wouldn't want
to experience a reality surrounded by hot military men?! The worst thing is
that sometimes you can sit at your PC for hours trying to do justice to the
characters you've invented. Writing can be a struggle and those paralyzing
moments when you can't find the right words are a nightmare.
• One thing
(object, not people) you can’t live without?
I'd love to say something stylish like a painting, or a
piece of family history, like a photo album, but in reality, it would be my PC.
Being so far from home, and with my husband sometimes deployed, my PC is my entire
communications portal. I feel lost without it.
• One
unusual item in/on/around your workspace?
I have a writing plant on my desk. One Saturday, my husband
was going into town for groceries and asked me if I wanted anything. “Something
to help me write,” I whined in response, half expecting a bottle of wine. He
brought back a plant in a lovely bowl. I asked him what it was, and he put it
on the table, looked at it for a second and said, “It's a...(pause) writing
plant?” It worked, and there it has stayed ever since. It is, coincidentally,
the only plant I haven't killed.

Review:
Dangerous Territory is Emmy Curtis' debut novella and it's the first book in the Alpha Ops series. Let me just tell you...plainly...simply...this book was fantastic and I want MORE!
I have read many debut books in the past and lots of those are somewhat choppy, broken up a bit in the storyline, just not quite together....but Dangerous Territory is wonderfully smooth and the story flows perfectly! I cannot believe this is a debut book!
Of course it is just my type of story with sizzling hotness, fast-paced action, and an absolute stud-muffin of a military man who can rescue me anytime! I cannot wait for more in this series and more from Emmy Curtis, If she writes them I will read them...please keep 'em coming!
